Being Vintagey in Missouri: Day Three

Happy Weekend to you all! Today I would like to with you all my third day of my trip to visit Brittany from Va-Voom Vintage. It was the weekend were we did the most shopping and found the most amazing things. We hit a local antique store Friday night and three amazing thrift stores on Saturday (day three of the trip). Some things I didn't buy but I took photos of them because they were so neat.

I saw these two wall hangings of Laurel and Hardy and I adore them. I immediately texted my husband and asked him "yeah or nay". I wasn't surprised when he said "nay". That was a good call on his part because although I am hoping to incorporate some vintage into my home after we repaint (starting this month!!) and redecorate, I just couldn't figure out where I would have put these two knuckleheads! Did I mention they were only $14.99 each! I know...I know...sooo tempting!

We went to the three thrift stores with Brittany's then very pregnant and beautiful sister named Chelsea. She was such a sport to shop with us. Can you believe her little princess came just a few days later?!! She's so beautiful like her mama and auntie (Brittany). Okay so enough gushing on cute babies hehe Look at what I scored at the thrift stores!!! I found a load of scarves-I have learned that the more accessories you have the more you have to work with. You don't necessarily have to have a zillion dresses but having lots of accessories to go with any possible outfit or to make an old look brand new-the key is accessories. The scarves were anywhere from .99-2.99.

I also scored a 1967 copy of The Outsiders. It is one of my favorite books and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this treasure. They were selling books for 5 for .99, I only purchased one, so imagine how inexpensive this beauty was. And the best bit of all-well its a first edition copy!! Yes, you read right!!! Swoon!!!

I have been eyeing melamine plates for the longest time and I found these beauties for $1.49 a piece and they were also 30% off! Gahhh! And my biggest kitchen find was this vintage ice crusher. Brittany has one as well and adores her so she highly recommended it to me. Cool thing was, I purchased it for just $3.00 and in an Estate Sale we went to, Brittany found the same one for $24.00!! So it does pay to shop around whether you are shopping online, in retails shops, thrift stores, or yard sales. Always keep your eye on finding a good deal!

I also scored a few tops and skirts for regular everyday wear for myself. The prices ranged from $1.99 to 5.99 the most. I LOVE thrift stores! And I honestly have no problems buying used clothing because if that means I get to save more to go to the house or the kids or the family in general then yeah for that! Plus I will still look cute in my new dudes hehe 

Have I told you that I love purses?! Well, when all else fails, purses always fit right so hence why I adore them. The navy and red purse was $3.99, the coral purse was $2.99, and the wicker purse was $3.99. After find these amazing pieces to add to my vintage wardrobe, I truly find it hard to pay for anything higher unless its fabulous and I am sure you would agree too hehe

Brittany and I ended our day at my favorite eatery, Magpie's. It was an awesome shopping day and I learned so much about shopping from Brittany. She is an AMAZING shopper and has such a great eye to finding things! Thank you Brittany!!! xox

You may have noticed that I had my hair wrapped up in the first photo. Brittany taught me this amazing 1940's pin curl set. She will post the tutorial on her blog as some point but I can tell you now that my curls came out awesome! I loved it and it stayed fabulous even on the next day!

So, what amazing things have you found in thrift stores? Tomorrow I will share with you the massive haul I made at the Antique Malls! Omg-Antique Malls are my favorite place....so drool worthy!!

Being Vintagey in Missouri: Day Two (Pt 2)

I'm so glad you all enjoyed our sneak peak of our photo shoot with Monica Moore! Although we were beat, we ended our night with a beautiful dinner and a very unplanned horse and buggy ride through Historic St. Charles. I have only done a horse and buggy ride once for my honeymoon (we split our honeymoon between Manhattan and California) and it was so amazing! When Brittany pointed at the horse and buggy, I just knew we had to go for it and do it! You only live once, right?

The best part of the ride was seeing Brittany smiling from ear to ear! My other favorite part was getting to look at the town from a different perspective. I also found my future home and my hubby agrees with me....can you just look at that house below (to the right)! Isn't it amazing??!! We won't be moving to Missouri but gee that house is just dreamy hehe

We ate at this restaurant called Lewis and Clark's and the food was beyond heavenly! So tasty and yummy. I cannot wait to take my family next time we go and yes there will most definitely be a next time!

I did try some white wine, although I asked Brittany to finish it off for me hehe. I am such a water girl. I prefer it over anything else but it was nice to have a few sips of this delicious white wine. Gee, I must remember what it was called.

Being Vintagey in Missouri: Day Two (Pt 1)

My second day in Missouri with Brittany was a world wind! We were tired from staying up late and prepping for the shoot but we were rearing to go! Our photographer, Monica Moore drove in from Illinois and was truly divine to work with. She was at ease with herself and her abilities as a photographer, a combination I haven't worked with in a while.

Brittany and I dressed up and modeled through four decades. We started with the rock 'n rollin' 1950's, then the patriotic 1940's, the mod 1960's, and ended the day with the roarin' 1920's/30's. I am sooo happy to share with you a sneak peak of our work together. I placed the photos in chronological order because I thought  it would be neat to see the transitions. It was so much fun to play dress up and to model with my friend. I personally didn't feel tired until the very end of the day. It hit me like a ton of bricks and I realized how hard we really worked on these shoots. I do hope you like them! They will be used mainly for our emagazine, Hey Doll! Vintage Magazine.

I had so much fun with Brittany and Monica. I couldn't have asked for a better shoot than this. It was just pure fun and a joy to do. That is the way a photo shoot should feel like.

We ended our day with a bang,  but you have to tune in tomorrow to see what we did!

Being Vintagey in Missouri: Day One

On Sunday evening I returned home from a four day trip visiting Brittany from Va-Voom Vintage. Omg! That was a huge secret to keep from you all but I wanted it to be a surprise. So.... SURPRISE!!!!! hehe I flew in on Thursday morning and my first day with Brittany was spent shopping at two fabulous thrift stores, getting my hair cut by Nikki, and ending the evening with some Mexican food!

I started my day eating lunch with Brittany and her children at my favorite eatery in St. Charles called Magpies. The melted Bree cheese with fruit was heavenly! One must eat well before one shops til they drop!

These are some of my goodies from the thrift stores. The dresses were four dollars each and the skirts were three dollars. The scarves were about one to two dollars as were the bracelets (sold in packs).

 My dress was purchased on Etsy from a seller who had owned this handmade dress. It was made from a 1942 pattern, is a rustic red color with little ladybugs on it. Super cute and super comfy!

Ohhh this was my yummy Mexican food-totally stuffed my face hehe This truly was a perfect first day! We didn't over do it and we got a lot done! That night we prepared for our photo shoot with Photography by Monica Moore. Tune in tomorrow for a sneak peak on our shoot! We did four decades in five hours! It was a blast!

My Vintage Wardrobe: Easter 1950's Style

Happy belated Easter and Happy Spring! Finally, spring weather is on its way! I hope it stays and lingers here in the big apple for a while because the summers here are just horrendous. Gah! So, how did most of you spend your Eastertime? How is the weather in your part of the world?

Yesterday the Easter bunny (aka me) was feverishly working on getting the house in order which is tough to do because it is in a state of what I call "paint prepping" and setting up to surprise the little ones with their Easter goodies. All this while dressed up for the first time for Easter. Ahhhh it an't easy being a bunny during Eastertime hehe

They went bonkers over their goodies and we did our 3rd annual Easter egg hunt-so much fun! I matched the boys with navy blue polo shirts with jeans and my girl wore a blue gingham dress with a white cardigan. So naturally mama had to find a dress to match with them! And I did just that! I scored this beauty on Etsy. It is a 1950's housewife dress, nothing too fancy because I knew I would be home for all the Easter festivities. It has a zipper in the front and a side pocket which I LOVE! It also comes with a matching belt which I also love. I now look for dresses with belts, saves me the time to search for belts online, which is not always an easy task.

I accessorized with a white beaded necklace, white beaded bracelet, white screw back earrings, and a brooch with three small dogs on it. You may have seen it being sold on Etsy and Ebay-it is worth it-love it to bits! And I adore brooches that have meaning to me-anything with three things on it (ie three dogs, three hearts, etc) to me represents my three children.

Now the hair. Um, okay it looks like a mess but I promise it looked a lot better when I was inside the house without the wind tossing it around. I made a mistake and set my hair with many (I use something similar to pillow rollers) rollers which then created a head of curls. Geesh, my hair can really curl. Good grief. It's so weird because when I was little my hair was pin straight! Anyhoo-I brushed it out and shaped it and worked on it for over 30 minutes! That's just too much for me. I need a proper haircut that will allow me to work on a hairstyle for less that that. And in the midst of doing my hair and makeup I am fending off a two year old from opening the bathroom door and grabbing all my supplies and a five year old who suddenly needs to potty when mama is in there. It was madness but I like my overall look. Just my hair that came out super curly and was not easily tamed not even with products. Lesson learned: set hair in larger segments not smaller ones!!!!

 What do you think? Did I pull off a 1950's housewife look? I know its not a traditional Easter outfit since I have no gloves or bonnet on but it is a start! Most of my family was happily supportive but others looked at me like I was a nutcase. My beloved friend and neighbor Mary and her daughter did as well, which was a disappointment to me but oh well. I think people expect me to be a mess and in jeans and yoga pants all day long. Or better still dress like the 2013 woman which is a hot mess right there. No thank you.

I love my jeans and yoga pants but when I dress up I much rather prefer to do it vintage style. I feel pretty and put together and oh how did women back then host gatherings with all the garments one wears underneath their dresses. Kudos to them and to me darnit! I pulled off a vintage look and Easter and YES-I am sooooooooooooo beat! I am just happy the babies were happy with their goodies and I shall leave you with a little glimpse of them tearing into their baskets!!!
