Rago Girdle Review: Show Off Your Best Curves

The summer in New York has brought to my attention that I passionately dislike extreme heat and humidity. With that said, I have realized this summer that it is most challenging for me to dress vintage in this type of weather than in any other.

Usually when I dress up I wear my bra (of course), stockings, and then some type of tummy support. Add on my leg braces (that are plastic), my shoes, and makeup on and I felt like a melting wax figure!

This actually got me thinking. I have been curious about vintage bras, girdles, and stockings for a bit now and wondered to myself if possibly wearing an open bottom girdle would not only give my tummy support but allow myself to feel less constricted with the full pantyhose on and instead wear stockings attached to the garter-which I have never done.

I also have been looking for more comfortable option for tummy support. I love my Spanx but sometimes it would make me feel like I was being choked no matter what I am wearing I like to feel comfortable. My braces already make me feel uncomfortable (they are awesome but I feel constricted in them) so I think that's one of the main reasons I look for comfort when it comes to fashion.

So, I decided to go for it and find myself an open bottom girdle. After seeing an episode of Call the Midwife and seeing a character wearing one with a side zipper, I knew that I had to have one. I figured a side zipper would be so much more easier for my hands than pulling up the Spanx. And that's another thing I look for when it comes to vintage, I look for pieces that won't strain my hands-ie. odd buttons/zippers, tight pieces, etc.

I am happy today to bring to you a review on Rago's Open Bottom Girdle 1294. I purchased it from Secret's and Lace and it was shipped promptly and packaged well.

Now before you look at the photos-take note that my biggest weak spot is my post-babies tummy. I will not lie, I have a pouch but I am working hard at learning to accept it.

I wore a simple but pretty 1950's cotton dress and I picked this one especially because the cut of the dress sort of accentuates the mid area. See for yourself. You be the judge if Rago would be right for you!
1950's Cotton Blue Dress
This is what I wore underneath my dress for the first photos. Maidenform bra and tummy support. They don't have this one online but they may in the shop-love it-so comfy especial under pants/jeans.

Rago Open Bottom Girdle
These set of photos were taken wearing my Rago girdle and my 1960's bullet bra. The bra is sooo comfortable because it has no wires-just what my girls need! hehe  I also had to show you the accessories I have for this outfit too hehe

I found both to be extremely comfortable but for the dress I say 100% for the Rago. I loved how much tummy support it gave me. I think there is a difference. What I loved about it also is that it felt so comfortable and it was easy to put on. It was a little tricky to get the zipper up for me, only because my hands weak. It was easy to go up and down the stairs as well. I haven't worn it with the stockings just yet but I have a feeling I will love it even more. I mean if anyone needs to feel a little sexy under their dress it is me! My braces defiantly do not add to the feeling of sexiness hehe

All in all to show off your best curves I highly recommend the Rago Open Bottom Girdle. I purchased mine high wasted but you can also get one that is lower.

Have you tried Rago? What do you love/dislike about them?

  1. I have several open bottom girdles and a couple garter belts from secrets in lace and I love them all. None of mine are the high waisted ones though and I really think I should get a few of those. I tend not to wear the ones I have right now because my tummy just kind of hangs over top of them. Not very attractive or sexy. lol I do have some spanx though and they work pretty well once you struggle to get them up where they belong, but boy are they hot, or at least mine are. I usually wear them in the winter.

    1. The high waist is great, takes getting used to of course, took me ages to get used to the waistband of my Playtex 18-hour girdle but now I love the way it pulls me in, taking two inches off my waist and helping to support and hold me up even better.

  2. I would say I do notice a bit of a difference and prefer the second set of pictures. Your dress looks very perfect for the summer! I'm still on the hunt for the perfect girdle. I have one I bought but it's a bit bulky. I love the idea of a side zipper. Thanks for sharing this post.

    1. Best of luck in your search, the high waisted 18-hour Playtex open bottom girdle I find great for everyday wear. A professional corsettiere I know, Patricia, also recommends it as thre most comfortable girdle there is and she wears it all the time as well.
But for special occasions we would need a firmer model, especially for the belly, and I'm still searching for the most comfortable of those, if it exists!
I think the Elizabeth girdle from Secrets in Lace could be the answer. I've never worn a Rago, that's next as it does so much for Bunny here.

  3. I just got my first retro open bottom girdle, and I love it! I find that it looks much better under vintage clothes, plus the freedom from full sets of tights/pantyhose is a big plus. A side zipper sounds amazing, though!

    1. Yes the second girdle, the Rago, is a lot better - the first is more of a cincher than a girdle.

  5. I love my rago open bottom girdle...but I am surprised to hear you can wear it without stockings? If I do that mine rolls up on me. I couldn't live without my girdle and longline bra and I find them surprisingly comfortable.

    1. You look fabulous , especially in the Rago that helps your dress drape beautifully over you. But can you tell us, how does it feel inside it?
My Playtex has my eyes popping out, it's that tight - but it's really the most comfy I've ever worn.

  8. You look fantastic in both series of shots, but I agree that the Rago helps create an even more streamlined figure. Wonderful review - it's really neat to see the way two somewhat similar undergarments can change how a dress falls/fits on the same person.

  9. Perfectly timed post, because I was just reading that women NEVER went without shapewear under their dresses and was wondering if it is something I should invest in. I think a little protection from those vicious metal zippers coming too close to my skin is another fantastic reason for them. ;)

    1. Zippers are great,. trouble is they get stuck and break and your girdle is then useless, happened to me with a Crownette that it otherwise a lovely girdle with luxury satin back panel too.
We always had girdles on under our dresses because they had become a part of us we were so used to them and we'd feel naked and unsupported without them.
Also we felt really confident being so contained and it's still unladylike to have big bellies and droopy bottoms wriggling around like two cats fighting inside your knickers as you walk.
That's why a girdle is essential if you want to look any way normal at all.

    1. Yes , a firm foundation is number one when it comes to style and fashion - and you will find as you progress in girdles that you feel the most comfortable you have ever felt in a giordle.

i think the second set of pics do look better. you always look very lovely anyhow. did you not find that wearing the girdle without hose meant the girdle kept riding up? that's a complaint many have made on research ive done .

    2. Rebecca, the Playtex range has a wonderful fabric that breathes and keeps cool no matter how hot the weather. Try wearing a very light cotton pantees OVER the girdle too. The big old bloomers I find great for that - and it hides my girdle completely too so nobody sees me so trussed up.

  13. I wear the Playtex 18-hour model girdles all the time and they give me the same nice figure that your girdle gives you in the pictures here, congratulations!
And the way the girdle grabs my belly and bottom and all and holds me up is the height of comfort, so much so I couldn't do without wearing a girdle now.
I think it's all in the mind, once you accept you have to wear a girdle for to look nice then it comes real easy, it's just a way of life as the girdle becomes part of me.
And the nylon stockings are the icing on the cake.

  21. Wearing a girdle day in, day out, as I do, may seem to others to be a bit irksome, but parading around a big belly and a drooping bottom unaided without a girdle is a lot worse, I can tell you!

Yes I had to get my mind over being the odd one out wearing such an erotic garment as a girdle all the time, I still marvel at it and all that it does for my figure - but it is its great support and the beautiful way it holds me up all the time and tucks me in and hugs me that is so wonderful about wearing a girdle.

  22. I just got mine in the post from Amazon and I'm thrilled that it fit. It's on for three hours now and no problem from it at all.
It's very comfortable though not as comfortable as my Playtex girdles that are now very hard to get. It pulls in my belly a bit more than a Playtex though the Playtex excels at firmly pulling in my bottom.
However this Ragi 1294 holds me up much better as it's longer. Hey I like the seams that run down along my bottom too.
And it holds all my organs back where they should be , my doctor tells me, and holds my bottom and belly up doing valuable work for my heart !
It looks very sophisticated too, very "posh" with all the satin and lace work. The six suspenders hold my nylon stockings up tight - I've always much preferred stockings to tights.
I just pull my pantees up over it but find they're too scanty to cover this huge girdle. So I'm ordering big knickers, probably bloomers, next to cover it up as it looks "dramatic" to say the least and I don't want anybody fainting if they see it on me by accident! Yes, it's extremely sexy.
    I love it.
