1940's Everyday Wavy Hairstyle Trial

Some of you may or may not recall when I first started my blog I confessed that I am horrible at doing my own hair. Looking back I still feel the same but honestly I think the majority of the reason I am is because of circumstances. I think that if I did have more women around me growing up I probably would have embraced it more.

As a pre-teen and teenager I would from time to time practice doing my hair. No one told me to do it or encouraged or discouraged. I just did it on my own and my dad purchased my first foam rollers for me when I was twelve.

Now as an adult, its been something I have wanted to conquer. This time around to learn how to do some 1940's hairstyles on my own hair. I haven't made much time for practice but recently I decided to try once a week to do a hair trial based on tutorials from Youtube, Vintage Blogs, Films, or Books.

This hair trial is a 1940's everyday wavy hairstyle. I followed a tutorial from Elegant Musings. Its pretty simple to follow--I like this tutorial!
First, please forgive how I look. It was literally 11pm and I have to do these trials usually late because the munchkins are sleeping and hubby is home to help take the photos. LOL So, I set my hair with my hot rollers and I finally got roller clips for them because those flimsy wire ones were NOT holding my hair at all!

This is how my hair looked afterwards. I left it "dirty" but learned that two days is too much since the top part starts to get oily, so next time I will do my hair trials just one day after I have washed it. I also realized that I have way too much hair for ten hot rollers and I added another set of rollers and clips on my amazon cart. I look forward to getting more because I feel like I could have achieved a lot more waves and hairstyle could have looked better. But you decide....
Okay so I have no products in it since it was late at night, but I got the gist of how to set it to achieve the 40s waves and I look forward to practicing this hairstyle a bit more. I love my hair this length, I think it suits me a lot better than the short middy I had a year ago.

I will be posting more 1940's hair trials shortly. If there are any that you think I should try, let me know! I would love to try them all at least once until I find the ones that work best for me!

  1. Even though my hair is cut shorter at the moment, it is thick and I always have trouble with having enough rollers. The set I am using right now has 20 in it and sometimes I still come up just one or two short.

I like the waves you've created here and do think that you will get better results with more rollers. Im excited to follow along with your trials and cant wait for the next one.

  2. I use hot rollers for a fast set. If you want those marcel waves, pin curl it then the next day brush it out with your fingers first, then a bristle brush, it will work.

  4. Looks great, Bunny! {As usual.} I love the wave look, but I think my personal fave is the pageboy.

  5. I agree with Joanna, you have beautiful thick hair! More rollers will I'm sure do the trick for you, and you're off to a great start with it. I've gone back and forth between more or less rollers (other than my bangs, lately I've been using 9 not including bangs, but have done as many as 20 or so). One thing I can almost never do is hot rollers, it just doesn't hold in my hair. But I admit: I just can't stomach pin curls. That's crossing a boundary into more time than I'm willing to spend on my hair. LOL

  6. Hi Bunny,

My hair is about the same length as your, I think. You have such lovely thick, dark hair.

I always have to wash my hair every other day, or it starts to get oily and flat. I like it as full as possible.

I love Casey's Elegant Musings blog. She seems like a sweet person.

Looking forward to your next hair post.

    :) Hope

  7. Hi sweet Bunny, you're very lucky that you're able to get so much curl out of using hot rollers. At best, no matter what I try, I get a slight bit of wave that maybe lasts for a few hours. I need to pin curl or use another wet setting method if I'm to have any hope of a half-decent curl. And speaking of other methods, have you tried rag curls? That's the approach I use more than any other, and just toss them in (to damp hair) before going to bed. The curl usually lasts a couple of days and can be left in ringlets or brushed out fairly well (at least on my fine, straight hair).

    1. My hair behaves like that as well. Wet sets are the only think that work for me and standing pin curls, not flat for me. But that seems to depends very much on hair. My hairdresser usually curls my hair with a flat iron when I cut it and it looks great that day- the next day gone. A friend, with very long hair, got curls that lasted several days from teh same hairdresser and method.

  8. Wow this makes it seems so EASY! That 40s look is one of my favorite hairstyles. It's so gorgeous and glamorous and sexy. You look so lovely with the style and your hair came out amazing.

I have a really hard time keeping hot rollers to stay in my hair. It seems the weight of my hair brings them down and they fall out. I've always been the girl who has to sleep in those painful plastic rollers. :S
