I have read in many a vintage blog and got the impression that Jeans are an article of clothing that seem not to be a standard favorite. Many vintage gals swear off jeans and to a certain extent I get why they do it. I assume they want to break away from the modern style of dressing and wear more obvious vintage inspired outfits.
But you see here is where I have the problem. You really can't get any more vintage than a pair of blue Jeans!
The earliest Jeans were made in 1852 for a young miner but it wasn't until 1873 by Jacob Davis, Levi Strauss, and Calvin Rogers created the patent for Jeans. They were originally designed for cowboys but became increasingly popular in the 1940's and 1950's-first among the working class and then among teenagers.
Women did not shy away from the use of Jeans in the 1940's and beyond. Many celebrities such as Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe wore them often and preferred the comfort and ease that they gave.
Jeans have changed in style throughout the years-in the 1940's they were styled like men's trousers, 1950's they were capri styled, 1960's cuffed, 1970's flared, etc. They have lasted and been around for almost 140 years and if they aren't vintage I really don't know what is!
For those who seek 1940's and 1950's reproduction Jeans you can find them at: Freddies of Pinewood, Vivien of Holloway, and Lily Scarlet. I hope to add a pair of 1940's reproduction Jeans one day to my daily vintage wardrobe. Until then, I hope this post inspired you to add some to yours!!

Ohh I love vintage styled jeans! I have a pair from Freddie's and from Vivian of Holloway and love them both. Such a great post.

Ohhh lucky gal! Cant wait to get some myself-whoot! xox
DeleteLove these photos! Your blog is also great...I didn't know you then, or I'd worry that I stole your blog title! Nice to meet others who enjoy the 50s lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jamie! So glad I found your blog and thank you!! xox
DeleteAmen!! I just got a pair of freddies and although I can't get into them yet {freddies sizing is so weird} I know I will wear them constantly!!! I love vintage and am a tomboy, so naturally I would have jeans. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love vintage photos of celebs wearing jeans! Marilyn, Grace, and Liz all looked so sexy in them! :)
ReplyDeleteMe too! Hope to find more soon hehe xox
DeleteWhile I do consider myself more of a dresses and skirts kinda gal, when I reach for vintage/repro pants, 9 times out of 10, it's jeans I'm going for (and more often than not, my Freddies side button ones, to be exact). I'd often struggled to find (modern) jeans when I was younger that were flattering on my petite, curvy frame, but (as is so often the case, in my experience) it was vintage (or in this case, repro) to rescue. Turns out I just needed a higher waist and wider legs, and presto jeans and I were suddenly bffs! :)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the immensely lovely birthday wishes, sweetheart, I really appreciate them!!!

I feel the same! Once you find the pair of jeans that fit your figure well and flatter you there is no going back. I used to wear bell bottoms yrs ago-they were the best on me. Hard to find though...hummm maybe I should find some again hehe xox
DeleteBunny check out Ebay and get the real thing, they are way cheaper, I usually can get a pair for about 30 bucks compared to the European ones, that are almost 100. You can find NOS too, they last forever, I love the pairs that have fleece inside. I will showcase them probably during the 200's part of my challenge. P.S. love the Grace Kelly photo, I just found a Grace Kelly barbie for my daughter today!
ReplyDeleteOh Trina I will def check that out!! Exciting! Didnt think of searching for authentic jeans! Omg I want that Barbie too heheh its on my Amazon wishlist hehe Hope your daughter likes her new Barbie!!
DeleteI agree that jeans are a staple of ANY wardrobe, it doesn't matter if its a vintage or a modern wardrobe. My issue is that the only jeans I can find that I like are denim capris. This means that my ankles are cold in winter, which I don't enjoy. I've looked at Freddie's and Vivien's before, but I want to know what they would look like on me before I purchase them... and thats not going to happen any time soon. So I am back to the idea of sewing my own.... Maybe I should have a look on ebay too, as Trina suggested.
