Vintagey Things Galore!

Although I have been quiet on the vintage front, it doesn't mean I haven't kept myself busy doing vintagey things. There is a lots to share with all of you so I created a collage of everything! Okay so in no particular order here is what I have been up to and what I have discovered.
Many of our rockabilly/vintage sisters are on their way to attend the Viva Las Vegas Weekender. I am sure we will see some fabulous photos on their blogs soon enough! Just makes me wish their were 1940's/WWII weekend events here in the states. Alas, just keeps me motivated to fly over to land of tea and crumpets someday soon! hehe
There are more vintagey events coming up this spring as well. For those who swoon over classic films and its stars of yesteryear, there is the fantastic TCM Film Festival. And yes, this is SO on my Vision Board! How could it not be? There are so few classic film actors with us today so if you can swing by to this event (in California), it looks spectacular! And Robert Osborne will be there....double swoon!
The last event I will share with you all is called Chiller Theatre. It may not be for everyone but for those who enjoy conventions and meeting your favorite actors/actresses-this may be for you. The last time I attended a Chiller event was just before my husband and I became pregnant with our first child, so that makes it 2007 I believe. It was a blast, we met most of the cast of "The Christmas Story", Peter Criss from Kiss, and so many other unbelievable people. This year I will be going with my husband, brother, and his girlfriend. I am beyond thrilled because aside from the fact that the four of us have never hung out together, I will also hopefully be meeting Patty Duke, two members from The Monkees, Jay north (original Denise the Menace), Ricou Browning (the last Universal Monster actor) from "Creature from the Black Lagoon). There will be lots of modern actors there as well but I have my sights on the old school bunch. I mean Patty Duke??!!! O...M...G!

The third issue of Hey Doll! Vintage Magazine will be coming to your computer screen soon on April 6th. The issue is dedicated too the 1960's and we would love it if you sent us a photo of yourself (dressed 60's) for our Dolled Up section. We are also accepting submissions for future issues and some of the themes will be 1920's, 1930's, Patriotic, Summertime, etc. Anything from recipes, hometown vintage, DIY, personal stories, music, art, beauty, and how-to's. Just drop us a line at heydollvintagemagazine@yahoo.com Thank you!
We decided to dedicate our latest issue to the 1960's because aside from the fact that we (Brittany and I) both love the 1960's, the show that reintroduced the world to this amazing decade will be returning! Mad Man will come back on Sunday, April 7th at 9pm for a TWO hour season premiere!!!! Tune in!
One of my favorite shows is also coming back! Call the Midwife Season Two premieres here in the states on Sunday, March 31st at 8pm. I cannot wait!!! Can you??
Like many of you--I am always search for the products that fit me best-literally and figuratively. I got some rave reviews from some of my vintage sisters and now I have two of the BEST bras ever! Amerimark has a slew on vintage-like products so I highly recommend checking out the site. Don't get discouraged because it looks like a site where older (and I mean like 70s-80s) women may shop at because they have some outstanding products. This bra is one of them and only cost me $14.99!!! I love how much support it gives and also has a little padding at the shoulder which is super comfy. It has no wires which is the best part for me because I am finding the wires to be ultra uncomfy! The only thing I would say is the shape it gives your breasts will take some getting used to. It gives you a 1940's silhouette but I love it hehe Oh yeah, also be aware that the company calls the phone number you give in your order-they try to sell health insurance, which I found strange so just don't give any information and politely hang up!
The last product I have to share with you all is called No 7 by Boots. I have been wanting to take some extra care of my skin lately especially since I have puffy eyes and dark circles due to constant lack of sleep. I have been using the facial wash every morning and night along with a under eye cream (photo to the right). In the morning I put on a day cream and during the evening a night cream. I have never used creams before so it is a new regime for me. I also use their facial scrub once a week and hope to get their mask as well. I really like it. My skin is softer to touch and all the products smell great. It has helped with my under eye problems but I do believe that more sleep will do the trick. Have you tried any No 7 products?

So, there you have it. All the little vintagey things that I have been up to lately or learning about or doing. hehe I would like to leave you with a bit of a tease. Once I reach 100 followers I will be hosting a BIG giveaway in order to celebrate. Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement!!

Screaming on the inside

Last week I shared with you all my latest journey in life. I waited six days to hear from my doctor and finally after three phone calls and lots of asking for my results....I have them.

First thing she said was, "there is no cancer" See, thing is after being a nervous wreck all week by the time the weekend came I did some reflection and realized that whatever the results are going to be there is nothing I can do to immediately change them. They will be what they will be. But I also came to the conclusion that I needed some answers in order to move to the next step. I wasn't going to allow a nonexistent phone call deter me from my goal. Hence why I kept calling.

So, yes...breathe...no cancer. But it didn't phase me-I don't know why. She continued to speak and told me the biopsy shows that I have abnormal cells. I can feel a small mass on the corner of my right breast, so that makes sense to me. Although I wonder to myself, "does abnormal cells mean that this is going to progress ultimately to something else?" It's a good question I think. I also think I have to do my own personal research.

The plan of action to take is that I will go for a MRI (finally) and afterwards I will be scheduled to have surgery on my breast to remove any of the abnormalities. Ugh. I say "ugh" because I have already had three foot surgeries, three c-sections, and numerous other procedures. At this moment the thought of more needles and being put under makes me sigh deeply.

I have to say after I heard this news, I realized I had so few people to call to share it. My husband was the first, then my dad, then my brother's girlfriend, left a message for a childhood friend, then Brittany of course, lastly sent a quick email to my friend Nick. Then it also hit me that I have all of you to share this with. I find such great comfort in the relationships and friendships that have been created all because we are fascinated with another time in history.

I want to thank you all, my vintage sisters, for being there when even friends that I have known for dozens of years have not been. For simply sharing kind words and votes of confidence in me. I don't know how to yet feel about this news. I am grateful and concerned and tired of worrying. And yet I almost feel like I am screaming inside. I cannot scream out loud because I won't want to wake the babies but I wish could. Until I can...I will keep my screams quiet, my worries to a minimal, and make sure this plan of action continues to move along its course.

Thank you all again, much hugs, Bunny xox

Be Victorious: Fighting a Great Fight!

For a few months now or perhaps it has really been for most of my life, I have always known that I would have a few battles before me to fight. I was walking on my toes since I was a child, by nine I was diagnosed with CMT, and my twelve I had my first major corrective surgery. And then when I was old enough to understand what my mother passed on from, I knew instinctively that I would have to continue carrying on the baton.

When I was in my early twenties I read somewhere that one should get mammograms ten years prior to the person closest (genetically) to them. Since at that point of my life the only person I could be that close to was my mother, I realized that I should have myself checked out yearly if possible. I remember walking into my first checkup and the ladies in the front desk said I was too young to get a mammogram done(I was 24)-well I told them my mother was too young to die. Yeap-that kept them quiet. I knew from then on I would have to be strong and when someone told me no, I would have to say yes, especially when it came to my health.

Fast forward to my late twenties and early thirties and I began having yearly mammograms. I would stop when pregnant and breast feeding but continued on with them after my body healed from child birth. I had my last one done this past December and its from that point that my fight changed. It was time I went to a higher level of proactiveness when it came to this part of my health.

Four months of doctors giving me the run around, not accepting me as a patient for whatever reason, and basically not getting connected to the right doctors. I have learned NOT to give up and do not take NO for an answer. You must be your biggest advocate when it comes to your health and well-being.
A few times I felt very emotional and scared. Not scared of the big C word but mostly scared that I wouldn't get the help I need. I may not be rich and famous but I AM important in this world (as everyone is) and bigger than any of that, I am important to my family. I thought deeply about my children, my biggest dream come true, and I refuse to leave them. I now know my PURPOSE is to not only be a mother but to be THEIR mother. I don't know how it came to me but I can share with you all that it felt like a whisper to my spirit. With thoughts of them-I championed on.

With my amazing primary doctors help I have been connected to one of the best Breast Cancer Surgeons in New York. Today, I went to my appointment and she said she found something. I wasn't surprised as I have been feeling discomfort on both sides of my breasts especially before/during/after my monthly cycle. She did a biopsy and spoke to me at great length. She is spunky, kind, gentle, and very knowledgeable in her field. All the things I was praying for to find in a doctor. I knew I would have to find a surgeon to work with one day but of course I didn't know that day would be in my thirties.

I find out the results this Thursday. I also have to have an MRI and Genetic testing so that we know where we are heading with this. She is optimistic, as am I.
I don't know where this journey will lead me. My mother dropped the baton when she passed but as her daughter I have proudly picked it up and will continue to stand brave and fight back-for her, for me, and more importantly of all-for my children. Because if I could I would scream this out from the top of my lungs..."I have to live for them! I have to live for them!"

Every night I pray for courage and strength and I pray that I will be allowed to see my children into adulthood. Now more than ever my purpose made clear. I love doing what I do and I would love to do many more things but I mostly would love to just be their mother here and now and tomorrow.

I am sharing this with you all because I want you to know your bodies and stand up for your own health. No one will care more or love you more than yourself. Please have your yearly mammograms if you are 30+ or of high risk. And do not forget to do you monthly self breast exam.

I will share my news as it progresses and ask that when you can, you could send me some positive thoughts and prayers. I feel good about all of this but of course it doesn't hurt to ask the universe for a little more courage and strength. Hugs to you all.....Bunny

Ask Bunny...Questions Answered!

What or Who inspired you to become a pin-up model?
Like any little girl, I found my mother to be the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. As I grew older I began to admire the glamour of all the starlets in the classic films I would watch with my grandmother. I think it was Marilyn Monroe that first caught my attention because she was an outstanding model. She knew how to move her face and body in ways to always show her best. I believe all three of these things lead me to adore the classic pin-up look.

What sparked your love for vintage clothing?
I have always gravitated to "old" things. It is just a part of my personality. I think perhaps because I spent a great deal of time with my grandma that I learned to appreciate things that weren't as bright and shiny as the things in a store. She also introduced me to thrift shopping and I loved getting so much for so little. Who doesn't?

What items of clothing you think should be the first pieces a newbie purchases and why?
I think it would be important for a new person entering the vintage lifestyle to ask themselves a few important questions such as; what colors look best on you, what decades would flatter your figure best, and how many times will you really use these pieces? As a mother of three, I cannot help but always think of the practical side of things so even though its nice to have hundreds of pretty dresses in your closet, someone who is just beginning should tread lightly in investing in a vintage wardrobe. Start with basic colors, one or two simple dresses, a few cardigans, and slowly work your way into having a full wardrobe. It takes time but its worth the effort and patience.

What keeps you going in your journey to live a vintage life?
I love history and the stories of people so that keeps me excited about collecting certain pieces and the like. I also am a very determined person. I like to live my life passionately and to create new dreams as old ones comes true. I must admit I enjoy learning about the past and how I can find my way to celebrate it and teach it to others so that we don't forget. It also makes me proud to see my husband and children see me doing creative things such as writing and modeling-to know that their wife/mother is an expressive and passionate person makes me happy.

What is the one moment in history you wish you could have witnessed personally?
This is such a great question! I would have loved to have been a part of a few. Just focusing on the 20th Century, I would say the 1940's-literally all of it hehe And I would have loved to have witnessed Elvis's and The Beatles first performances because I am big fans of both-although people say you can't be-I am. I would have also loved to have been a part of the 1960's-that decade holds a special place in my heart.

How are you so fabulous?
Oh my! I was born this way of course! hehe  And so were all of you! I believe it's up to the individual to believe they are no matter what others say to them!

What is your very favorite outfit with accessories? And, can you post a picture for us?

My favorite outfit I have to say so far is the one I am wearing in the photo above. All of it was borrowed from my friend Brittany's closest. I felt so beautiful wearing it and it was my very first time going out in public with my leg braces on. I felt beautiful.

What are some ways that you get a vintage look without spending a whole lot of money? Do you have any favorite low-cost tips or tricks you use?
I think one way to try to get a vintage look is to purchase clothing that may be from a different decade and work it as another. For example, 1960's-1980's dress are less expensive than 1930-1950's. You can find some that look like the earlier decades and add accessories and hair/makeup to create a feel of those decades.

I've seen that you do vintage modeling and pinup shoots; how did you get involved in that? Where did those opportunities come from and why did you decide to take them?
I started in the summer of 2011, about eight months after the birth of my 3rd child. I needed a pick me up and doing a pinup shoot made me feel amazing! I honestly created those opportunities for myself. I sought out photographers and people who wanted to be creative. Anyone can do it, you just have to be persistent.

Who is your favorite author?
I have many favorite authors! Some are C.S Lewis, Clive Barker, Lois Duncan, S.E. Hinton, and V.C. Andrews....I know deep stuff hehe NOT! But I enjoy a good mystery/romance/thriller/thinking book. Oh and my ultimate favorite is The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.

If you could travel back in time and spend a day with any classic film star who would it be and why?
Years ago I would have said MM, but now I realize I would have just wanted to save her. Since I would want to be with someone who I could just enjoy their company and wisdom-gosh this is hard....okay can I choose three? LOL How about Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Cary Grant....oh yeah! Because imagine the conversations we would have??!!!

Thank you all for submitting such great questions! This was super fun! I hope you feel as thought you learned a wee bit more about me! I highly suggest other bloggers ask their readers to ask them questions. It's nice to get to know each other better, isn't?

Double Magazine Giveaway!

Well, you all know by now how much of a vintage nerd I am. I love to read (when I can sneak it in here and there these days hehe) and today I found a magazine dedicated to Doris Day. I picked one up for myself and one to giveaway to my great readers!

Now, it was put together by a magazine called Globe-they seem to be a gossipy magazine but the information seems to be spot on and its really very well put together. I have always wondered what happened to her especially since her ended her film career in the 1960's. It says she is living out her last days and that's where it leans toward being gossipy-who knows if that is true and so I leave that bit up in the air.

The second part of this giveaway is a copy of Vintage Life Magazine-February 2013. The issue I was in! I meant to get a copy away early but its been a super busy two months and a few heavy things have been going on-one I will share with you all very soon. Oh, and if you want me to sign this issue I would be happy to-just let me know!!

So, how about we split these magazines up for two giveaways! Many folks in Europe can get their hands on an issue of Vintage Life Magazine and many folks here in the states can get their hands on the Doris Day Issue from Globe Magazine

Vintage Life Magazine=U.S.A./Canada
Globe Magazine-Doris Day=Europe/Australia

To enter just simply follow these instructions:
  • Make sure you are a follower of my blog *smile*
  • In your entry state which Magazine you are submitting for the giveaway and where you are located
  • Lastly, state what are your favorite vintage magazines from today or yesteryear
Remember only the U.S.A./Canada readers can enter for Vintage Life Magazine and only the Europe/Australia readers can enter for the Globe Magazine Issue on Doris Day.

Good Luck! The winners will be announced on Saturday, March 23rd!

It pays to shop around!!

Some people believe that it pays to shop around. I am one that defiantly believes it is worth the time and effort to comparison shop. Whether it is for clothes, household items, food, or even big ticket items like plane tickets, a car, or even a home. My father always tells me that it is not how much you make but what you do with what you make. Its been five years that I have been a stay at home mother and I have learned so many incredibly valuable lessons when it comes to finances and shopping.

One of my many motto's has now become, "Get more bang for your buck!" Little did I know, even this phrase is vintage! It was first used in the 1950's and then again in the 1960's. Whether you have little to work with or a lot, might as well get the most of what you have!

Like many of you I search Etsy and Ebay frequently. Most of the time (about 90%) I am on those sites just to look and observe and learn. I have learned a lot about vintage clothing and such just by looking alone. But this is where it gets interesting.

Not too long ago I was looking through Ebay and searching for "1940's Brooches". I like to look at the different types of brooches that are for sale and compare with what Etsy has. Then I came across this amazing brooch that I knew I have seen before but wasn't sure if it was still around. To my surprise it was still available (on Etsy) and I compared it to the one I found on Ebay and yes they were the same! My eyes became large and almost popped out of my head because the price difference was huge...and I mean huge!

Another shocker....the brooch didn't sell! I then emailed the seller and asked if I could buy the brooch via a "buy it now" option. This seller was amazing to work with and they said yes!!! Would you like too know what I paid???? Well, first take a look at the AMAZING brooch I scored...
It's it just the neatest brooch EVER!??? I purchased it for $28.00 including shipping!!!!! My hubby treated me to this beauty and the best treat of all is that on Etsy it is being sold for $155 dollars!!!!! Oh yes, you read that right! Is this a deal or what?! The seller I worked with is so amazing I will most likely shop from them (when I can) over and over again. I sort of feel flabbergasted that I purchased this unique brooch for such a low price but I also feel so satisfied that I shopped around and didn't just settle for the prices that are out there.

I am now the proud owner of this 1940's beauty. I simply cannot wait to pin this on-whoot! Bunny is doing a happy dance!

Have you had this happen to you? What deals and finds did you score? Any tips for shopping around for vintage?

Vintage Magazines: 1946 Beautify Your Figure: Caring for Your Body

I was recently gifted this amazing issue of Beautify Your Figure from 1946 by a friend of mine. I enjoyed vintage magazines before, but after reading this issue-I now LOVE vintage magazines!

I think they are such a great source of information and insight into the life and times of yesterday. The other great thing about vintage magazines is that they are sort of like vintage dresses, unique in their own way. You may be able to find multiple copies of a certain magazine but what may be difficult is finding the same year or month that it was published.

This issue was prestine and published in 1946-post World War II. I am really happy to be able to share with you some pages of the issue that promote good health and beauty tips. These tips are time tested and are as true today as they were over 60 years ago.

Good health and beauty begins with eating well, exercising, and resting (or getting good amounts of sleep in everyday).
I love this menu-isn't it clever! I think it is important to set up a menu not just for financial reasons (it helps save on money to plan meals ahead) but also to know what you are taking in and such.
After a good meal and workout, it is time to relax! Ahhhhh she looks comfy doesn't she?
I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into the Beautify Your Figure issue. Tomorrow I will share a few more pages on how to help focus on other aspects of your beauty.
